TV Review: Anurag Kashyap and Anushka Sharma on 'Koffee With Karan'

There's been a fair bit of buzz about this week's episode and not because of any spicy tidbits or quotable quotes, but for Anushka Sharma's surgery, which seems to have gone a little awry. Meh. Can't be that bad I thought especially since most of the top actresses have at some point or another, gone under the knife to enhance their looks.

Alas I was in for a shock, when Sharma sashayed down the stairs looking but a shadow of the radiant beauty we'd seen in films like Band Baaja Baarat and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

I've always thought she's a talented actress, but I suspect this plastic mishap could cost her her rocking career. Her lips looked puffed up and even her face looked stretched and expressionless, and it's a darned shame that actresses have to resort to such extreme measures to stay afloat in the industry. And with Sharma, it's worse because she was already doing so well, so what was the need to disfigure her already beautiful face to this mess we wonder?

Appearances aside, the actress seemed a bit on edge and visibly uncomfortable and awkward, which was a little strange as she's never been that way on her previous appearances on the show, or even otherwise.

She flatly denied everything under the sun from her animosity with Deepika Padukone (who's dating ex beau Ranveer Singh), to dating cricketeer Virat Kohli, and none of that really came as much of a surprise.

The next guest, Anurag Kashyap was in sharp contrast to Anushka, and his answers were quick and interesting. Kashyap has always been a bit of an outsider when it comes to commercial Bollywood. His films aren't so mainstream, and even his opinion on the TV show (he used to refer to it as the 'mutual masturbation show'), and always had a grudge agains Johar, when Kuch Kuch Hota Hai won all the accolades over Satya back in 1998.

Anurag went on to add that he used to be on a vendetta against mainstream films, but then realised it's the money earned from commercial blockbusters which allows for the smaller films to be made. The director also went on to add that he's a lot more lenient and media savvy now, since his next film is the mega budgeted Bombay Velvet which stars Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in the lead. The director was candid and forthright with his answers, but overall I felt that this week's guests didn't really help the show take off, and/or give it the energy that previous guests have given it.

Sharma appeared grounded when she said she was very happy in her space and the work she was doing, and doesn't believe in all the backstabbing, and even goes as far as sending congratulatory messages to her female contemporaries. Karan in his usual mocking manner thought this was rare. The actress contradicted herself during the Rapid Fire Round though, as she admitted to have bitched about her co-stars behind their backs!

I liked how Anushka was all praise for Priyanka Chopra's performance in Barfi!. Admittedly that was refreshing, as I've never seen an actress praise a rival so passionately, and I did like her honesty with some of the answers. In fact she even praised Deepika's performance in Cocktail and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, so fair play to her. Whether its all correctness for the show or whether she's genuinely like that is unclear, but it's best to give her the benefit of the doubt I guess.

Anurag Kashyap went on to win the Rapid Fire Round by a margin, but either way I thought Anushka's answers were pretty quick too – especially the 'Ram Ram Ram' retort against Ranveer-Deepika. A case of sour grapes perhaps, but clever nonetheless.

And her answer about having 'perspective' over her contemporaries? Really? If she had that, she would never have gone ahead and ruined such a beautiful face with those over inflated lips! I'm sorry, I'm going on about that a bit too much, but why ruin something so perfectly presentable and cute, with needles and crap, especially when your career is going great guns anyway?

Anurag was pretty scathing in comparison, especially against Ram Gopal Varma, Kareena Kapoor and award ceremonies in India, and I liked that he openly said that he was envious of Rajkumar Hirani and Dibakar Banerjee – his humility was impressive.

Anushka won the quiz, purely because Anurag is so clueless when it came to mainstream cinema, and that was kinda expected.

Overall, this week's show was a colossal disappointment. The guests didn't really have the chemistry and rapport to keep things buzzing, but on a brighter note, questions about Ranbir and Katrina were kept to a bare minimum – a relief because that's getting way too old.

Oh and a side note, the opinions expressed against Anushka Sharma's surgical enhancements are purely personal. I think I'm just massively disappointed, because I've been a big fan of both her work and her natural beauty, and I really wish she hadn't gone down the route of plastic surgery. In fact, her confidence seems to have completely diminished, and I hope this is just a blip, because career wise the actress has a lot to look forward to this year with P.K, Bombay Velvet and Zoya Akhtar's next.

Bring on next week's episode featuring a usually sardonic and dry Abhishek Bachchan and Ms Care-A-Damn Farah Khan, the clip looked like it will be a lot of fun!

Have you seen this week's episode? What did you think of it?

Update as of 10 February 2014: Anushka addresses 'lip mishap' on Twitter:

Shortly after this article was written, the actress tweeted her side of the story and this is what she had to say:

Hellooooo everyone !! Today I am here to talk about my lips !! Yes ! There ! I said it .. My lips !

As a person I find it difficult to talk about my personal life and hence have always maintained a low profile choosing to interact with you all on twitter with my random -mostly illogical thoughts seeming like the only thing I feel ok about ..that's just who I am .. But in today's time where PR stories and feeding people with information constantly or making appearances is a fad somewhere people like me get lost in translation or in this case translations !

Lately there has been a LOT of talk about me in this particular episode of Koffee with Karan . Mainly regarding my lips . I am here to just convey what I have to say regarding the same . I am talking about it only because this story has taken a scary direction and things have been 'blown out of proportion' ( pun intended ;) ) ...

For a short while now I have been using a temporary lip enhancing tool and that along with make up techniques ( I have learnt over the years) is the reason why there might be a change in the appearance of my lips. Having stated this fact let me very vehemently assure everyone that I have by no means gone 'under the knife ' or done any kind of 'plastic surgery' or undergone any intrusive procedure . This was my decision and was done for the sake of my look in my upcoming film Bombay velvet,a period drama where I play a jazz singer in the 1960's - 70's . And it was taken from the referencing of that time .

The drastic change in my appearance on KWK is due to lot of factors put together and not just my lips . Everyone goes through good and bad days. Did I think I looked good on the KWK episode ? NO . I do feel I could have done things differently .

To put the current conjectures and reportage straight once and for all from my end - I have said this before and am saying it again .. I do not believe in plastic surgery or any other means of unnatural permanent changes to the body . I do not support it or stand for it or recommend it .
Now if someday my legs appear different and sexy to you ! Please don't say I've done 'Something' ...

Oh ! And also ... Some of the 'joker' jokes/memes doing the rounds though a bit mean did bring a smile to my lips ;)

Goodnight to all
Love and Light
Anushka
