First Look and Theatrical Trailer: 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'

It's going to be a busy year for Marvel fans at the movies next year. As if both Captain America The Winter Soldier and X-Men Days Of Future Past were not enough, they now also have a sequel of the 2012 reboot of Spider-Man to look forward to.

In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, New York City has embraced Spidey (Andrew Garfield) as their hero, he's got the girl Gwen (Emma Stone) and life's ticking along just fine, until not one, not two, but three formidable super villains, Electro (Jamie Foxx), Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and the Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan) pose a dangerous threat to the city, and ultimately the world.

The 2012 film was an unnecessary reboot of everyone's favourite web slinger, and while it came too soon after Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, Webb's version was far more faithful to the source material and with Garfield owning the role as Peter Parker, the film turned out to be surprisingly good, spurning three more sequels, of which this is the first one.

The trailer, unsurprisingly, is very CGI heavy, but has glimpses of some good performances and with Stone and Garflield's chemistry still obviously intact, this may be another film to watch out for next summer. I'm quite curious to see how Foxx portrays Electro and it will be interesting to see DeHaan as an antagonist after his awesome turn in 2012's sleeper hit Chronicle.

The only gripe in this instance is that perhaps three villains might be stretching it a little. Tim Burton managed it in Batman Returns, but many argue it always takes away too much time from the hero or doesn't do the villains the justice they deserve — I still haven't gotten over the shoddy treatment given to my favourite villain of all time, Venom by Raimi in Spider-Man 3.

Webb has cleverly refrained from giving Electro that awful green and yellow costume too, and has instead opted for the 'godlike' version — he alternates on power level in the comics but looks he's fully charged in the movie.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swings into theatres on 2 May 2014, and also stars Sally Field, Martin Sheen, Colm Feore, Chris Cooper, Chris Zylka, Denis Leary and Felicity Jones. Are you looking forward to another film featuring your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man? Let us know below!
