TV Review: Akshay Kumar on 'Koffee With Karan'
Akshay Kumar, like his contemporaries Salman Khan and Aamir Khan before him has till date, never been on Karan Johar's infamous couch, and he seemingly had a fairly good justification for the same. Kumar believes in extreme diplomacy, is early to rise and early to bed and is known to be a thorough professional, and so by his own accord, was fairly apprehensive of appearing on the show. I don't see why though. Because from all of Johar's guests it was Kumar who gave as good as he got and turned the tables on the usually quick witted host, when he got the latter to answer a series of controversial questions which left poor KJo fumbling for words — and how!
Kumar appeared on the show looking rather fashionable, and that new grey beard works on him like a charm. Here's one actor, that undoubtedly looks much better with age and maturity, and unlike his contemporaries has aged incredibly gracefully.
Kumar was fairly quick on the show (albeit a little defensive), and seems to still be in madly in love with wife Twinkle Khanna, who it was revealed is unabashedly candid about everything from her distaste in Kumar's films, right through to revealing that as an actress she was never all that! It also came to light how the ex actress was banking heavily on Dharmesh Darshan's Mela, and it was only when that film sank without a trace, did the actress finally relent and agree to marry Kumar, and all but give up her non existent acting career. As an aside, host Johar also went on to reveal how Twinkle or Tina, as she's fondly referred to, was the only woman he ever fell in love with. Well well. If that isn't telling I don't know what is!
I loved how Kumar seems to have picked up a few tips from her, and was brutally honest about how he was where he was without the help of big banners and directors (his host included), and how he doesn't give a hoot about awards and is more bothered about rewards. In his defense, the actor has grown immensely over the years and it's high time someone acknowledges that at award ceremonies. I was immensely impressed with his turn in Special 26 and it's a shame that film didn't get half the recognition it deserved.
Kumar's heroines (from Lara, to Kareena to Sonakshi), then went on air to praise the actor for his timing and his sense of humour, but they didn't add much to the show that we weren't aware of already!
During the 'grilling' or the Rapid Fire round, Kumar had a few quick witted retorts, but most of his answers were a little dull. I did love his 'ass' responses though and his quick remark about how he had height over the three ruling Khans. Interestingly, he steered clear of any mention of Priyanka Chopra, however when it came to rating her in the acting department, he scored her pretty highly.
The best part of the show was when Kumar, grilled the host with his own set of Rapid Fire questions, and though a little hesitant, Johar's answers were interesting, especially the ones where he'd said he chose the SRK camp over Salman's camp any day, and how he would cast Aamir Khan and Deepika Padukone, in his final film, (and here I was expecting him to say SRK-Kajol!)
Overall, the show was alright. Akshay Kumar was charming, but I wasn't particularly impressed with the questions he had to answer, and at times the actor appeared a little defensive. However, fair play to him for giving host Karan Johar a taste of his own medicine, and for that alone this show is worth catching on your idiot box this coming weekend (UK)!
